Late Roman villa mosaics
Haleplibahçe Mosaic Museum
Overview
Beside the Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum, a vast domed hall shelters the floors of a Late Roman villa where they were found. The mosaics came to light in 2006 during building works in the Haleplibahçe quarter, and they are best known for the Amazon queens on a hunt, identified as Hippolyte, Antiope, Melanippe and Penthesilea, alongside scenes from the life of Achilles and a personification of Ktisis. Raised walkways carry visitors above the floors so the whole compositions can be read from above.

History & Discovery
Workers laying services for a new park in Haleplibahçe struck mosaic floors in 2006. Excavation revealed a Roman villa whose rooms were paved with hunting scenes and mythological panels, among them the Amazon queens and the life of Achilles. Rather than lift them, the museum was built over the floors where they lie, under one of the largest column-free roofs in Türkiye.
The landscape
The view
A single huge column-free dome, some 82 metres across, covers the villa floors, with walkways threading above coloured hunting scenes laid out exactly where they were found.
Photography
Shoot down from the walkway edges to keep whole panels square in the frame; the light is even and low, so steady the camera and leave the flash off.
